What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small, screw-like posts made from durable materials. They are surgically placed in the jaw to replace a missing tooth. The posts fuse with your jawbone and secure an implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture to restore your smile.
The implant is placed in the jawbone. An abutment is attached to the implant. A crown is secured to the abutment.

Why choose dental implants over traditional bridges and dentures?

Candidates for Treatment

To qualify for this procedure, it is imperative that you have good oral health, sufficient jawbone strength, and that you do not smoke. Treatment is only safe for patients who are healthy enough to undergo surgery. You should check with your doctor to find out if you are at an increased risk of complications.

Since implants are placed within the jaw, patients need to have the adequate bone density to be successful. If needed, our Nassau County, NY, dentists can offer preliminary procedures such as bone grafting or a sinus lift to prepare your jawbone and restore your candidacy.

Guided Surgery Going Above and Beyond For Our Patients

To ensure the best possible results for our Long Island area patients, our doctors rely on guided implant surgery.

This technique uses 3-D computer technology to predetermine the most accurate location for your implants before we begin the procedure. This helps us prevent malpositioned implants, which could lead to complications and the failure of treatment.

Laser dentistry

You may have heard that dental lasers can be used for gum treatments and root canals, but did you know that they can improve the dental implant process as well? By using modern laser technology during your implant placement surgery, your dentist can work with greater precision, provide a more comfortable experience, and even expedite healing.

Dr. Howard Golan holds a Mastership Certification from the World Clinical Laser Institute, the world's largest organization for dental laser education. Why We Prefer Zirconia Implants

The majority of dental implants are made of titanium, but our dentists favor zirconia implants for several reasons:

Hypoallergenic

While rare, some people have an allergy or sensitivity to metal, which compromises the success of titanium implants. Zirconia is metal-free and highly biocompatible, meaning there's no risk of an allergic reaction to a zirconia implant post.

Natural Look

For many patients, zirconia dental implants offer greater aesthetic value than titanium implants. Metal implants can be visible near the gum tissue, creating a dark ring along the tooth ridge. Zirconia dental implants are white and don't cause discoloration.

Less Plaque Buildup

Zirconia implants are smoother than titanium implants, so they have fewer grooves and ridges for bacterial plaque to develop in. A 2021 study also showed that they respond better to plaque control and other oral hygiene treatments. This means that your zirconia implants can help reduce the risk of infection during your recovery period and promote better oral health for years to come.

Dental Implant Treatment Timeline

Our dental patients in the greater Long Island, NY, area will each receive a custom treatment plan at their consultation. While treatment varies slightly depending on the condition of your smile, these are the general steps you can expect.
We used advanced techniques to increase the success of your implants including PRF treatment.

Consultation

We used advanced techniques to increase the success of your implants including PRF treatment.

Anesthesia

We offer all types of sedation to make patients as comfortable as possible. If necessary, we will bring in an anesthesiologist to administer and monitor the effects of heavier sedation.

Implant Placement

Once you are comfortable, we will make small incisions and insert the titanium implant posts. After surgery, we will send you home with detailed recovery instructions and schedule your next follow-up visit.

Osseointegration

During the healing process, known as osseointegration, your dental implants fuse with your jaw. Recovery generally takes about four to six months.

Abutments

After you have healed, you will undergo a second surgery to attach abutments. Abutments are small components that fit directly on top of the implant posts and hold your restoration securely in place. In about two weeks, your gums will heal and you will be ready for your permanent prosthetics.

Restoration

Earlier in your treatment Dr. Golan will have taken digital impressions of your teeth, to design your custom restoration. Once you are ready for your implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture, it is secured in place and your treatment is complete.

PRF The Chance for a Smoother Recovery

Our Nassau County dental patients have the opportunity to undergo platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) treatment with their dental implant procedure. PRF uses a combination of the patient’s platelets mixed with cytokines (growth factors) to promote quick soft and hard tissue healing. The techniques can help you heal after implant surgery and can potentially reduce complications.

5 Stars!

Two weeks ago I had surgery and preparation for an implant. I had no discomfort or swelling afterward. Their hygienists, assistants, and office staff are superb. Kudos to everyone there!!! Joan Lelis Kosmij

The Cost Of Treatment

Dental implant treatment does require an investment, but most patients feel they are worth it for the superior health and functional benefits they provide. Implant-supported crowns, bridges, and dentures also last longer than traditional restorations and will need fewer replacements over the course of a lifetime.

While basic dental insurance does not cover implants and abutments, you may receive partial coverage for your implant-supported restorations. We do accept dental insurance, and the team at our Nassau County office will gladly work with your provider to help you secure the best possible coverage for your treatment.

Our practice is happy to accept financing through CareCredit®, allowing patients to make affordable monthly payments on their implant treatment.
